Learn More About Hero Quest Youth Leader Roles

Especially for those new to Heroic Youth, sometimes there can be confusion about the Youth Leader Roles in Hero Quest/Summit.  Here is a quick summary of the general roles of each male and female position in the Heroic Youth Hero Quest program.

These descriptions focus mainly on day three, Hero Quest Summit, when the young knights and handmaidens will be there. But the same hierarchy and structure will exist during the first two days of Hero Quest, during the youth simulation. Master Knights and Princess will still be the leaders and everyone will be in the camps or kingdoms to which they have been assigned.

Master Knight

The Master Knights are usually 15-19 years old and are the primary leaders over the boys at Hero Quest and Hero Quest Summit. They are responsible for mentoring their teams, teaching the little knights, and making sure that everything runs smoothly. They are held to the highest behavioral standard and are expected to represent Heroic Youth at all times.

Princess

The Princesses are usually 15-19 years old and are the primary leaders over the girls at Hero Quest and Hero Quest Summit. They are responsible for mentoring their teams, teaching the little handmaidens, and making sure that everything runs smoothly. They are held to the highest behavioral standard and are expected to represent Heroic Youth at all times.

Squire

The Squire is a Master Knight in training. He is the right-hand man of the MK and is there to assist in any task required. He is also there to make sure his MK has what he needs for his own personal well-being. He is there to lead in the absence of the Master Knight and should be especially focused on the unity of his group. Just like with the Master Knight, he should be representing Heroic Youth well with his attitudes and behavior at all times. The squire carries his Master Knight’s banner into battle.

They assist with making sure the young knights have the water and snacks they need, takes them to the bathroom, watches out for those who are feeling left out and lonely, and acts as a big brother and friend to the younger boys. Pages must always understand the concepts of staying at their posts and seeing a need/filling a need. They make the camps run smoothly.

Flag Bearer

Flag bearers do more than just carry the flag, though that is an important part of their job. They act as big sisters to the handmaidens, comforting and encouraging them whenever they are in need. They watch for any situations that the Princess may not see and alert her or the Lady in Waiting so they can head off problems. They make the kingdoms run smoothly.

Guardian

Guardians, from commanders, to squad leaders, to squad members, are responsible for providing the opposition to the knights. They understand that without opposition, there can be no growth and the give the knights the chance to put into practice what they have learned through their time at Summit. They give their best service in making sure the boys all get a chance to fight and be victorious in the final battle, along with all other plot points that they may be required for.

Shield Maiden

Shield Maidens provide the same service for the handmaidens that the guardians provide for the knights. They understand that without opposition, there can be no growth and the give the handmaidens the chance to put into practice what they have learned through their time at Summit. They give their best service in making sure the girls all get a chance to fight and be victorious in the final battle, along with all other plot points that they may be required for.
